What Are Nitrogen PSA Systems?

Most on-site nitrogen generators are either membrane nitrogen generators or PSA generators. PSA generators use sieves to trap oxygen and other small molecules, creating nitrogen with purity levels up to 99.999%. They can also produce higher volumes of nitrogen than membrane-based systems, making them ideal for applications with a high flow demand. 

How Does a PSA Nitrogen Generation System Work?

A PSA nitrogen generation system typically consists of two towers, each containing a carbon molecular sieve (CMS). The system relies on two phases — the adsorption or separation phase and the regenerative phase. 

During adsorption, clean, dry, compressed air flows from the bottom of the first tower through the sieve. The CMS has extremely narrow pore openings, allowing small molecules like oxygen, water and carbon dioxide to be isolated under pressure. The sieve essentially traps these molecules. Bigger molecules, like nitrogen, cannot enter the sieve. They bypass the CMS and flow out of the system as nitrogen gas. 

At a certain point, nitrogen PSA systems switch to regenerative mode. By now, most of the nitrogen has flowed out of the system except for a small amount. The remaining trapped oxygen molecules are purged from the tower.

Some applications that use nitrogen, like fire prevention and tire inflation, do not require the high purity levels PSA systems can supply. Others do, including applications like food packaging and the beverage industry. The petrochemical industry, metal fabrication, medical facilities, electronics manufacturers and other industries also rely on PSA systems for high-flow, pure nitrogen.
